Scoutmaster Receives Edina Mayors Commendation
Mike Seeger of Troop 3068 recognized for leadership and service
For more than 15 years, Mike Seeger has held Scouting leadership roles in his Edina community where he now serves as a police officer. Those efforts were recently recognized when Mike was surprised at the troops’ May 25 meeting by the appearance of James Hovland, Edina mayor, Dave Nelson , Police Chief and a videographer for a special presentation.
In front of his Scouts, troop families and friends, Mike was awarded the 2021 Mayor's Community Involvement Commendation. This is presented annually to a City employee for outstanding volunteer service to the community above and beyond his or her position with the City.
That service to youth through Scouting is certainly above and beyond. An Eagle Scout himself, Mike has been instrumental in helping Scouts set goals and to achieve them since 2006. Beginning as a den leader, continuing in volunteer roles as a committee member, assistant Scoutmaster and then taking position of Scoutmaster two years ago, Mike has been committed to helping instill the ideals of Scouting in the young people of his community.
Seeger has helped lead troop high adventure treks to Philmont in New Mexico, as well as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and is making plans for the Florida Sea Base in 2022. He stresses the importance for the respect and care for our natural world and through his leadership the troop has adopted Melody Lake Park for twice a year Scout clean-up efforts.
Assistant Scoutmaster, Mike Hagenson wrote in the nomination of Mike that “Personal growth and development are a core focus of Scouting and Mr. Seeger has demonstrated repeatedly his commitment to each Scout to reach their full potential through skills-based programming and youth-mentoring-youth initiatives that teach Scouts how to be empowered and confident. He actively encourages Scouts to learn and practice leadership skills, to participate in both shared and total leadership situations, and to understand the concepts of becoming a servant leader. This helps a Scout accept the leadership role of others and guides them towards citizenship and character development.”
